Letter to the editor: The question of military assault weapons

Posted: Thursday, Feb 28th, 2013

Studies show that mentally ill people are many times more likely to be victims of violence than perpetrators of violence!

When we have politicians out here in this country not willing to recognize the fact that the easy access to military assault weapons in the hands of way too many people may contribute to the mass slaughter of innocent young children and students and moviegoers, I really wonder just where we are headed as a nation.

We are being told that these guns and 100-round clips are not the problem; itís our mental health services, but, researching this, one finds that the Republican party has cut funding for such programs.

No one likes to talk about the radical talk about our freedoms and our rights that infiltrate into the heads of some radical-thinking individuals who convince themselves to take matters into their own hands.

The classic example here is the abortion doctor, Tiller. Then we see Wayne Lapierre with the NRA, now not even supporting background checks on gun purchases and trades! How are we to catch all of these mental cases (if they are the problem), or at least stop some of these radical-thinking individuals from having easy access to these weapons?

This myth that gun controls and bans have not worked is just that, a myth! We also have the right wing talking point that the whole effort here is that President Obama is out to get all of our guns! Really?

This nation has over 300 millions guns and, no matter what kinds of guns we have, the people cannot compete with our massive socialist military strongly supported by the Republican party!

Along with our freedoms and rights also comes responsibilities and we do not have the right to use these assault weapons for mass killings. Even the brutal mass killing of young kids is not enough to overcome the gun lobbyists control over our politicians.
